What is Curriculum Online?
Curriculum Online (COL) is the next step in the UK government's
sequence of investments in ICT for schools, building on 4 years
of the ICT in Schools Programme (formerly known as the National
Grid for Learning).
The DfES says "The vision of Curriculum Online is one of online
access to a wide range of digital learning materials, easily accessible
to teachers which they can use to support their teaching across
the curriculum."
The programme was announced in December 2001 when the Prime Minister
pledged £50 million in the first year of operation for schools
to buy Curriculum Online resources.
The COL portal offers a database of certified resources, searchable
by Key Stage, subject and topic. The DfES is distributing eLearning
Credits (eLCs) to all maintained schools, non-maintained special
schools and pupil referral units in England. The first £30
million of eLCs will cover the period from September 2002 to March
2003 then the next £20 million will be available from April
2003. This funding is in addition to schools' existing NGfL Standards
Fund money.
