Stig of the Dump has been a favourite book, at home and at school, for longer than we care to remember. It's the tale of how an adventurous boy meets Stig, an incredible 'cave person'. This pack brings the story to life as an animated text adventure.
Using their knowledge of the first three chapters of the book, pupils construct sentences to interact with the 'virtual' environment of people, objects and locations from Barney's house and, of course, the dump, to turn Stig's cave into a cosy home for the winter.
Pupils can move between Barney's home and the dump by typing commands such as GO NORTH or IN, or by clicking on useful command words in pop-up menus. Only by carefully reading the descriptions of each location and actively looking for clues (and, of course, remembering what happened in the book) can they succeed in completing their 'daily' tasks and receive 'treasures' from Stig.
Whether you use Stig as a huge comprehension exercise, as a tool to encourage reading for meaning, or as the focus for integrated project work - or all three - you'll find that it really does work. Suitable for individual, group or whole-class sessions, Stig complements the Literacy aims of all primary schools, developing a sense of narrative and extending reading, problem-solving and mapping skills.
