Sherlock turns pupils into 'text detectives', who have to spot what's missing from a piece of text.

They move a pointer to the letter they're thinking about, then type it in, When they get stuck they can 'peek', listen to, or 'buy' a word or letter. Vowels, consonants, capital letters, word-starts, middles, ends, punctuation marks, even whole words, are just some of the characters or letter combinations that Sherlock can remove, under your control - all of a particular type, or a percentage of your choice.

You can use the texts supplied with the pack, type your own, or load .txt files. All of these can be customised to fit specific learning objectives for individuals or groups, via the easy-to-use Teacher's page. Each file can have a picture (.bmp) attached and saved with it to put the work in context, and saved files can, of course, be used over and over again. Clips from class readers, portions of poetry, and snippets from Science books, and so on, can all be effective, and all 'sherlocked' text can be printed as worksheets.

Sherlock uses well-established techniques to develop comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, concentration and predictive reading skills, in foreign languages as well as English. It can also be useful in cross-curricular work, and even in Maths, (e.g. 3 x 4 = — ?) Optional scoring and timing systems are provided.
